On Saturday we woke up ready for our trip to the zoo! The hub, me, Britton, and my friend Whitney and her boyfriend Josh were all ready to meet up at 10:30 a.m., in the hopes it wouldn't be too hot. Luckily, Britton woke up in a very happy, sunny mood.
There must have been at least 500 strollers at the zoo. And it was getting awfully hot. But we unfolded our zoo maps, only to discover that the elephants (my favorite!) were having their habitat remodeled and wouldn't be on display. We also couldn't find the polar bears, and I still have no confirmation the zoo actually has polar bears.
We tried out the Children's Zoo section, and saw some beautiful macaws, but a lot of the activities were for older children. But we did stumble upon the gorillas and orangutans! Britton loved them, as they were some of the few animals she could actually see. The gorillas were so lazy, sleeping with their feet propped up on the glass. And one couple of gorillas were "spooning" each other, picking and eating nits off their backs. It sounds gross, but it was so cute to see. We managed to see a baby orangutan (swinging on the ropes), some lions, a giraffe, a peacock, and some warthogs. On the way out, we spotted an enclosure of deer, and the hub and I laughed since in West Virginia we had deer grazing in our backyard every day.
Here are the finger puppet versions of the animals we did see, courtesy of IKEA (and I know it's a moose, but we're pretending for our purposes here that it is a deer):

Being tired and spending the day in the sun, Britton lost her cool and threw her first honest-to-God temper tantrum/hissy fit. The hub and I, thoughtful and sympathetic parents were are, took the opportunity to document the occasion.
But the hub distracted Britton with the laptop and some silly voices, and turned her attitude around. All in all, a fabulous day!
