We knew it would be amazing to see the Grand Canyon, but that's all we planned on - just seeing it. We weren't prepared to hike with the kids, or take a mule ride to the bottom, or do anything but look, and that's fine. But I knew I wanted to do more on our trip than just look, and that made me think of the Antelope Canyons. I've seen those wavy sandstone photos all over Instagram, and I was surprised to learn that the Antelope Canyons were about 1.5 hours from Flagstaff.
We researched some tour groups (the canyons are owned by the Navajo and to tour them you must go with an official group), and decided on Antelope X. Antelope X is not as crowded as the Upper Antelope and Lower Antelope Canyons, and the tour guides allow you as much time as you like for taking photographs.
The rocks were cool to the touch and so smooth, and the kids enjoyed running through the twists and turns of the canyon. Someone in the group asked about floods, and our guide Sergio told us that when flooding rains come, they fill the canyon fast. They have Navajo tribe members who "watch" the weather all day and night - all they need is 10 minutes to clear the canyons of tourists.
If you ever get a chance to go to the Antelope Canyons, say yes! It was an amazing experience-of-a-lifetime.
